Help build a global social movement of photographic events and projects to support research and treatment of Dementia and memory related issues.

PHOTO WORKSHOPS

Join Steve Rutherford in Australia, New Zealand and the United States to learn photographic techniques that have awarded him over 70 times in 10 years. Hike, explore and discover some of the most amazing locations, you probably never heard of, including locations you can't usually get access to.

SOCIAL IMPACT PROJECT

Capture the Planet strives to impact the treatment of Dementia through contributions to research using various photography related projects throughout the world. Recent studies identified music and photography are never forgotten and can be used to ease the suffering of Dementia patients long term.

Your memories are more precious than you think.

When a global photography project needs all of us to contribute, all we ask is that you Capture the Planet.

Why are you needed?

Because memories matter.

Capture the Planet is a global social movement to remind us that photography is more important than we think. Literally.

Capture the Planet - Steve Rutherford

We believe that a photographic moment is a memory worth keeping, it’s an experience, not just a token snapshot. When your time is ending on this planet, how will you recall your life? Without captured memories, what you experienced, may as well be forgotten.Alzheimer’s and Dementia sufferers experience this every day. A life forgotten. The reliance on others to show them how they lived, why they lived and who they are. Capture the Planet is working towards a goal to change the way our lives are remembered. Photography has been proven to assist in the regeneration of memories of our elderly generations. Our mothers, fathers, uncles, and aunts. In supporting sufferers of Alzheimers and Dementia, we are looking for supporters and global ambassadors to inspire and educate other photographers and the community to capture millions of photographs to help build a system that proves photography can help our elders regenerate their memories, through neuroscience, and digital technology.

ITINERARY

1. Day 1 - We meet early for breakfast before heading to our very first location in the iconic Rocks area of Sydney. We explore many of the aspects of the area, and set ourselves up for a day of technique building and getting to know our equipment thoroughly. We explore some relatively unknown areas that provide for some great opportunities to explore portraiture, documentary and abstract photography using high contrast black and white techniques.2. Night 1 - After a late afternoon of exploring the Rocks and the harbour, we gather at a local restaurant for more discussions and some very special presentations of each of our images. Our day ends with a scrumptious dinner and drinks to look over the day’s images and chat about what we found and what we learned. We discuss ideas for the next day and get ready for another early start tomorrow.3. Day 2 - We meet again in the Rocks area for breakfast and head out for a series of scenarios to some of the most historic places in Sydney’s harbour. We build compositions and our understanding of capturing images in black and white. We test ourselves with some fun and enlightening ways to capture images to force our eyes to see better images. We end the day late with a summary and those who wish to stay can join us for a drink on us!

ITINERARY

Steve Rutherford Photography Book Series

Night 1 – We spend an evening getting to know one another and what each of our experience and goals are. Steve and Mike step through the details of the next five days including our safety briefing.DAY 1 – We rise early and head for our very first location. Exploring Queenstown is our first adventure. We take in the stunning scenery, the architectural features and many of the stunning viewpoints alongside Lake Wakatipu to help get your bearings and build ideas for the next 4 days of exploring. You will have your own free time during the day to explore in your own way if you wish, regrouping to end our day with the sunset from a height that will amaze you.Night 2 – Dinner and drinks after Day 1, we discuss our findings that day and relax showing off our images. Steve and Mike step us through what’s expected the next day including our safety briefing.DAY 2 – After registering at the rangers office, we venture north to Glenorchy to commence a deep hike into wilderness beyond what you have ever seen. We check our gear and commence an all day hike into the depths of Lord of the Rings country. Hiking will start pre dawn and conclude very late in the day after darkness, leaving us to travel back to Queenstown.Night 3 – We revel in the day and look over our images at the local restaurants and pubs, soaking up the mountain atmosphere. Steve and Mike step through the details of the next day including safety briefing.

*Please note alcoholic beverages, tips, national park fees and other gratuities are not included.

DAY 3 – After a slightly later start than the previous epic day, we head to the Arrowtown region to explore the many rivers and streams along the historic gold panning town’s fringes. The surrounding hills and mountains provide for challenging compositions, so we can further develop techniques and hone our skills. Returning via the Lower Shotover Valley, we spend the afternoon trekking the river by the same name, before ending back in Queenstown for the evening.Night 4 – We revel in the day and look over our images at the local restaurants and pubs, soaking up the mountain atmosphere. Steve and Mike step through the details of the next day including safety briefing and get our gear ready for a very early start the next morning. 4am. Yes, I said 4am.DAY 4 – From the evening prior, we decide the groups wishes to return to various places. We spend this day revisiting as needed. If requested by the group we will split into two groups with a leader for each and return to those locations to continue our refinement of the previous images. Ending our day, we will sit atop a very particular rise overlooking all of Queenstown and the Otago region. This view is beyond description and is somewhat unknown, but definitely unforgettable.Night 5 – We head to an overland location to explore our astrophotography workshop until midnight that night, if the weather permits. If not we will spend the evening editing and looking over what we have captured. Steve and Mike step through the details of our last day together including safety briefs.DAY 5 – We spend this day however you choose. You are free to explore town, or take a trip across to a remote farm on a 120 year old paddle steamer. It’s your choice. Our day ends this afternoon at one of the best old English pubs for a celebratory drink and a discussion on who would like to stay for an extra few days and follow myself and Mike around. If you need to catch a flight or drive on to your next accomodation or journey, we will bid you adieu and thank you, and help where we can to get you to your next destination
